Italy Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Sep. 21, 2009 - 46 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractItaly is Europe’s largest textiles and clothing (T&C) producer, with a strong fashion and design-ledmanufacturing operation that enjoys a high international reputation and a good track record for flexibilityand innovation. BMI ranks it as number seven in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In nominal terms, we estimate that to have been worth US$38.4bn in 2008. Despite its flexibility andresilience, the Italian industry has been under growing pressure from low-cost imports. We expectproduction to contract in the next two years, which will be deeply marked by the global and Italianrecessions. Our projection is for the industry to recover and grow after that, but subsequent expansion willbe moderate.Overall, Italy’s T&C value added will fall by 9.0% in 2009 and by 2.8% in 2010, reflecting very difficultinternational economic conditions. We see output being broadly flat in 2011 and 2012. The industry’strade performance will also reflect the especially challenging international economic situation. Webelieve Italian companies will be forced to lose business or increase their off-shoring in pursuit of lowercost assembly operations, with the higher value research and development, design and marketing stayingin Italy.
