Germany Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Sep. 21, 2009 - 46 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractGermany is a major textiles and clothing (T&C) player, with a reputation for good quality and high valueadded production, particularly in specialised clothing, home textiles and technical textiles product lines. The local industry has been downsizing over the last few decades as the main companies move significantelements of the production process overseas in search of more competitive labour costs. BMI ranksGermany as number 16 in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In nominal terms, weestimate that to have been worth US$10.27bn in 2008. The industry is experiencing a difficult two yearsin 2009 and 2010 as the global and European economies experience deep recession. The experience willforce further industry restructuring and consolidation. Overall German T&C value added will fall by 8.1% in 2009 and by 2.0% in 2010, reflecting very difficultinternational economic conditions. This downturn will nevertheless be less severe than in some otherEuropean countries. Given the continuing relocation of production outside Germany, we still see outputfalling a little in subsequent years. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especiallydifficult international economic situation. This year, combined T&C exports will fall by 26.0% toUS$25.67bn, with imports down by 19.0% to US$39.62bn. As a result, there will be a T&C trade deficitof US$13.95bn.
