- Methodology
AbstractBulgaria is a small-sized textile and clothing producer, with a good reputation for quality in its garmentssector, recent inward investment connected with European Union accession, and many small andmedium-sized producers. BMI ranks it as number 66 in the world in terms of textile and clothingmanufacturing value added. In nominal terms we estimate that to have been worth US6.03bn in 2008. Thecurrent challenge for the industry is to navigate a way through two difficult years of European recession, and to find a way to develop a longer-term plan to increase value added. At present many Bulgarianclothing companies are involved in cut-and-sew operations, with less of a presence in more lucrativeareas such as design, distribution, marketing and sales. It is clear, however, that the immediate focus is onhow to respond to the slump in demand - some companies have already had to close and workers havebeen laid off - BMI believes a process of industry restructuring is inevitable.
Overall Bulgarian textile and clothing value added will fall by 9.1% in 2009, and again by 2.4% in 2010,reflecting very difficult international economic conditions. We see a recovery setting in from 2011, withgrowth of 4.2%. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficult internationaleconomic situation. Total exports will fall by 23.0% this year to US$2.21bn, and by a further 1.1% toUS$2.19bn in 2010. On the import side, we see falls of 33.1% and 10.5% over the two years, with 2010imports totalling US$1.36bn.
