Abstract

Encoders is a growing market. New fields of application for encoders lead to a market growth in the next two to three years.

The world encoders market was worth $x,xxx.x million in 2008 and is expected to generate revenues of $x,xxx.x million in 2015 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of x.x% from 2008 to 2015.

The financial and industrial crisis has affected some of the major end-user markets and applications of encoders. Some of them include machine tools, electronics assembly and semiconductor fabrication, automotive, automated robotic systems (automation and assembly), and so on.

Therefore, the encoders market growth for 2009 and 2010 is expected to slow down. In this current market condition, companies are replacing rather than buying complete new systems. Instead of buying a complete package (where it involves three or four linear/rotary encoders), end users would replace one of the encoders that has a problem. Service and spare parts business is expected to increase in this scenario.

However, some of the new applications and markets expected to drive the growth are wind mills and solar power plants (renewable energy).

Rotary encoder is expected to retain its dominance in the total encoders market. Increase in the use of linear encoders is expected but not by replacing rotary encoders.

With regard to technologies, optical and magnetic sensing technologies dominated the rotary as well as the linear encoders market in 2008.

Capacitive and inductive are the new sensing technologies that have started to gain acceptance in the encoders market.

The market revenue share of optical sensing technology is expected to decrease during the forecast period due to the growing acceptance of magnetic and inductive sensing technologies.

Inductive sensing technology is expected to grow more in the linear encoders market, especially in applications involving dirty environment. Despite a drop in the market revenue share, optical sensing technology is still expected to dominate the encoders market. This is because it is not possible to achieve the precision of optical encoders with magnetic or inductive or capacitive encoders. The market revenue share of absolute encoders is expected to increase during the forecast period. In the past, to use an absolute encoder, customers had to buy extra controllers or cards (that was expensive) to read absolute signals. Therefore, in addition to the more expensive absolute encoder, customers also had to upgrade their PLCs and others. This was one of the reasons for the customers preferring incremental encoders. However, the new generation of PLCs and controllers are flexible and offer an interface for absolute encoders and the price of absolute encoders is also decreasing.

In 2008, xx.x% of the encoders were single-turn and xx.x% were multi-turn. This distribution is expected to remain the same during the forecast period.

In 2008, xx.x% of the encoders were housed and xx.x% were module and kit. This distribution is expected to remain the same during the forecast period.
