Abstract

BMI projects that the Philippine consumer electronics market will grow at a compound annual growthrate (CAGR) of 10% to US$4.8bn by 2013, driven by rising household PC penetration and LCD TV sets.The market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gamingproducts, was projected to be worth around US$3.3bn in 2009.

Demand in some product categories was flat or negative in H109 due to increased pressure on consumersfrom a weak global economy and a slowdown in remittances. These factors are likely to continue to affectsales of some products, particularly mobile handsets. Growth in other product categories such as LCD TVsets will help to prevent market stagnation, and recovery is expected in 2010.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 45% of Philippine consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts Philippine domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$1.5bn in 2009, up from US$1.4bn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 11%, with much growth coming from increasing PC penetration, which is about 4% currently.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 41% of Philippine consumer electronics spending in 2008. The Philippine domestic AV device market is projected at US$512mn this year. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11% between 2009-2013, to a value of US$768mn in that year.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales will account for around 16% of Philippine consumer electronics spending during BMI’s fiveyearforecast period. Following a revision of our mobile subscriber forecast, Philippine market handset sales are nowexpected to grow at a CAGR of 8% to 11.6mn units in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 132%. Sales will be dominated by lower-priced mass market phones, but 3G subscriber numbers will rise to 11.5mn during the forecast period.
