Abstract

The UAE consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is forecast at around US$3.0bn in 2009. Thisprojected to increase to US$4.0bn by 2013, driven the popularity of new electronic devices such as 3Gmobile handsets, smartphones, feature-rich notebooks, flat-screen LCD and plasma TV sets, MP3/MP4players and Blu-Ray format DVD players.

In H109 demand for mobile handsets and some categories of AV products was affected by the globaleconomic downturn. Domestic consumer spending was hit by lost wages, tighter credit and an exodus ofexpatriates, although this latter phenomenon may have been exaggerated.

BMI expects the consumer electronics devices market to pick up in H209, leading to low single-digitgrowth for the whole of 2009, followed by stronger growth in 2010. Connectivity and portability areamong the big trends driving consumer spending on state-of-the-art, well designed products.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 61% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts UAE domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$1.8bn in 2009, up from US$1.7bn in 2008. Computer hardware compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2009- 2013 period is forecast at about 9%, boosted by government and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) spendingas well as consumer segment growth.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 27% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2008. The UAE addressable AV device market is projected at US$797mn this year. The market is expected to grow at aCAGR of 7% between 2009-2013, to a value of US$1.0bn in that year. The rollout of HD TV broadcasting in the UAE will drive demand for premium TV sets and Blu-Ray devices.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 12% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2008. Following a reverse in 2009, UAE market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 6% to US$448mn in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 285%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market and driven by demand for PDAs, smartphones and 3G handsets.
