Abstract

Turkey’s consumer electronics devices market is estimated at US$7.7bn in 2009. Despite a sharpslowdown in consumer spending in 2009, and modest growth projected in 2010, demand is forecast toincrease at a CAGR of 11.l9% to US$12.1bn by 2013, driven by growing popularity of digital lifestyledevices such as LCD TV sets and notebook computers, and by rising incomes and lower pricesThe current trading environment is challenging, and BMI has downwardly revised its five-year revenuesprojections. However, Turkey is still expected to outperform most other emerging Europe markets overour 2009-2013 forecast period, due to some fundamental drivers. Digital camera penetration is expectedto pass 80% by 2012, and mobile subscriber penetration will pass 100% in 2010.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 62% of Turkey’s consumer electronics spending in 2008 and will continue to be the largest product segment. BMI forecasts Turkish computer hardware sales of US$4.8bn in 2009, up from US$4.5bn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period isforecast at about 13%, in the context of 10% PC penetration, and driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for around 21% of Turkey’s consumer electronics spending in 2008. Turkey’s domestic AV device market is estimated at US$1.7bn this year. Turkey’s evolution towards digitalTV services will help drive a 2009-2013 CAGR of 10%, with video devices such as TV sets, digital cameras and VCR players accounting for above 80% of demand.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 16% of Turkey’s consumer electronics spending in 2008. Turkey’smarket handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.8% to US$1.8bn in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 119%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with demandfor high-end models boosted by the launch of 3G services in 2009.
