Abstract

Saudi Arabia’s addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gamingproducts is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% to US$4.8bn by 2013,driven by the growing popularity of feature-rich high-end lifestyle products such as flat panel TV sets,smartphones and notebook computers with advanced graphics and entertainment features.

Youthful population demographics and an expanding population and electronics retail sector will drivegrowth. BMI forecast per capita spend consumer electronics spend at around US$150 in 2009, and thiscould reach US$166 by 2013. Despite the current economic slowdown, the Kingdom will continue to be alucrative market for consumer electronics over the forecast period.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 51% of Saudi Arabian consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMIforecast Saudi Arabian domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$1.9bn in 2009, up from US$1.8bn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 7%, with stronger demand for notebooks: the main factor driving retail segment growth.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 30% of Saudi Arabian consumer electronics spending in 2008. Saudi Arabia’saddressable AV device market is estimated at US$1.1bn in 2009. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of4% between 2009-2013, to a value of US$1.3bn in that year, with increased sales of flat panel TV sets in H109compensating for a contraction in overall TV set demand.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 20% of Saudi Arabian consumer electronics spending in 2008. SaudiArabia’s handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 3% to US$819mn in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 189%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with growing demand for smartphones, PDAs and 3G handsets, as the proportion of 3G users will rise to just over 32% of the mobilesubscriber base.
