Abstract

Epidemiology data indicate that there are about 200 million hypertension patients in China. Every year there are 2 million newly added patients with stroke, 500,000 newly added patients with myocardial infarction and 3 million patients died of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Annual costs for the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China are about RMB 130 billion (USD 18 billion), among which RMB 36.6 billions (USD 5.14 billion) are for hypertension treatment.

The Chinese theoretic market demand for hypertension drugs is USD 6.7 billion and the actual hypertension drug sales in China in 2007 are about USD 1.2 billion. Sales of hypertension drugs in the Chinese hospital market have been on a steady rise since 2003. Sales growths for hypertension drugs in China are 19.67%, 14.22%, 3% and 10.75% in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.
