Abstract

Taiwan’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets,and video, audio and gaming products, is projected to be worth around US$8.8bn in 2009. This isexpected to increase to US$10.0bn by 2013, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5%, which isslower than in the five preceding years.

In H109, demand for certain high-end product categories including smartphones and flatscreen TV setswas slower than anticipated, but most vendors expected demand to pick up by Q409. Growth will beaffected by the global economic slowdown and maturing product markets, but there will be a number ofkey growth drivers, including 3G phones, smartphones, netbooks, Blu-Ray DVD players and high-endnotebooks.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 50% of Taiwanese consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts Taiwanese computer hardware sales of US$4.5bn in 2009, up slightly from the previous year. With PC penetration above 70%, CAGR for the 2009-2013 period will be around 2%, but there will be growth areas in multimedia and entertainment notebooks and netbooks.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 34% of Taiwanese consumer electronics spending in 2008. In 2009 Taiwan’s domestic video, audio and gaming device market is projected at US$2.92bn. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% between 2009 and 2013, to a value of US$3.8bn in that year.Portable audio devices such as MP3/MP4 players account will continue to sell well, while fast-growing video applications include LCD TV sets and Blu-Ray DVD players.

Mobile Handsets

Taiwan mobile handset sales accounted for around 16% of Taiwanese consumer electronics spending in 2008. Total handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of about 1% to 7.5mn units in 2013, with themarket driven mainly by replacements as penetration is already above 100%. The fastest sales growth will be of 3G handset units.
