Abstract

South Korea’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobilehandsets, and video audio and gaming products, is projected to increase at a compound annual growthrate (CAGR) of 1% to US$12.7bn by 2013. Despite an impact from the global economic slowdown andmaturing product markets, there will be a number of growth areas.

New technologies and the roll-out of digital TV broadcasting ahead of analogue switch-off in 2013 willsupport sales of premium AV products, while more flexible operator data plans should mean anexpansion of the smartphone opportunity.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 31% of South Korean consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts South Korean computer hardware sales of US$3.3bn in 2009, unchanged from theprevious year. CAGR for the 2009-2013 period will be around 1.3%, but there will be growth areas in multimedia and entertainment notebooks.

AV

Video, audio and gaming devices accounted for around 23% of South Korean consumer electronics spending in 2008. South Korea’s domestic video, audio and gaming device market is projected at US$2.6bn in 2009. The market is expected to decline at a CAGR of -1.6% between 2009 and 2013, to avalue of US$2.4bn in that year. Video applications will account for around 60% of demand during the forecast period, with growth areas linked to new technologies such as LED TV sets andBlu-Ray.

Mobile Handsets

South Korean market mobile handset and handset device sales accounted for around 45% of South Korean consumer electronics spending in 2008. Total South Korean market handset sales are expectedto grow at a CAGR of about 2.6% to 27.5mn units in 2013, with the market driven mainly by replacements aspenetration passes 100%. The fastest sales growth will be of 3G handset units.
