AbstractIndonesia’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices,mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming products, is projected at around US$6.4bn in 2009. This isexpected to increase to US$10.5bn by 2013, driven by growing affordability of key products and anexpanding number of retail outlets.In 2009 a weaker global economy affected sales of some products, leading local vendors to cutproduction. Growth in product categories such as LCD TV sets will help to prevent stagnation, and theconsumer electronics market is projected to advance at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about13% through 2013. Mobile handset market growth is also expected to remain in double digits in 2009,despite a deceleration from 2008 growth levels. Computers Computer hardware accounted for around 36% of Indonesia’s consumer electronicsspending in 2008. BMI projects Indonesian computer sales (including notebooks andaccessories) of US$2.0bn in 2009, up from US$1.9bn in 2008. Computer hardwareCAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 12%, driven by a low PC penetrationrate of about 1.5% currently. AV Devices AV devices accounted for around 29% of Indonesian consumer electronics spending in2008. Indonesia’s domestic AV device market is projected at US$2.4bn in 2009. Themarket is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15% between 2009-2013, to a value ofUS$4.2bn in 2013. The gradual roll-out of digital TV broadcasting will drive theemergence of an addressable market for digital TV sets, estimated at around 30mn. Mobile Handsets Mobile handsets accounted for around 35% of consumer electronics spending in 2009,although market measurement is complicated by the illegal imports and refurbishedproducts factor, with such products accounting for a large portion of demand. Indonesia’s market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 13% to 23.8mn unitsin 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 172%.
