Abstract

Hong Kong’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, was estimated to be worth around US$3.4bn in2008. This is expected to increase to US$4.7bn by 2013, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of6.7%, slower than in the preceding five years.

2009 presents a challenging trade environment for vendors, with sharp year-on-year (y-o-y) declines inretail sales growth in the first three months of the year. Consumers retrenched due to concerns aboutrising unemployment and a negative wealth effect from the slump in asset prices since 2007.

However, netbook computers will sustain growth in the notebook segment, as telecoms operators focuson broadband revenues, while 3G handsets will be a growth area, and sales of smartphones are expectedto grow three to four times faster than the overall handset market

Computers

Computers accounted for around 54% of Hong Kong consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts HongKong computer hardware sales of US$2.04bn in 2009, slightly up from US$1.99bn the previous year. CAGR forthe 2009-2013 period will be around 6.8%. Wireless networking will be an important driver of computer - andespecially notebook - sales, with increasing demand for connectivity.

AV

AV demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3% between 2009 and 2013, to a value of US$1.5bn in that year. Videoapplications account for the largest share of the market, with growth areas including LCD TV sets and Blu-RayDVD players.

Mobile Handsets

BMI has downwardly revised its fiveyear mobile handset projections based onnew data about 3G subscribers. Hong Kong market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of about 2.8% toUS$483mn in 2013, with the market driven mainly by replacements, as penetration is already above 100%. 3Ghandset sales are forecast to grow at a 12.2% CAGR as 3G subscribers reach 6.8mn by 2013.
