Abstract

Australia’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming products, is projected to be worth around US$12.2bn in2009, with government stimulus handouts and lower interest rates having helped to boost demand in thefirst half of the year.

Despite continued economic uncertainty in 2009, the market is expected to grow a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4% to US$14.4bn by 2013, driven by demand for LCD and digital TV sets, notebook computers, digital cameras, and other key products, and by rising income, new technologies, and government information and communications technology (ICT) programmes.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 62% of Australia’s consumer electronics spending in 2008, and will continue to dominate spending. BMI forecasts that Australian PC sales (including notebooks and accessories) will approach US$6.1bn in 2009, with the market receiving a boost from Phase 2 of the Computers for Schools programme. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 3%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.

AV Devices

AV devices will be the fastest growing category of consumer electronics demand, reaching 23% of total consumer electronics spending by 2013. Australia’s domestic AV device market is projected to be US$1.9bn in 2009. Sales of large flat screen TV sets and digital cameras are projected to drive AV spending growth at a projected CAGR of 15% between 2009 and 2013.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 23% of Australian consumer electronics spending in 2008. Australian market handset sales are expected to grow slower than before, at a CAGR of 2%, to around US$3.0bn in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 125%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with growing demand for smartphones, PDAs, and 3G handsets.
