AbstractThe port authority of the Greater Port of St. Petersburg, Russia's largest container port, has recentlypublished the facility's throughput statistics for January-May 2009. According to the report, the porthandled 17.879mn tonnes of cargo, which is 26% less than during the same period during 2008. Thehandling of containers decreased to 493,288 TEUs, indicating a year-on-year fall of 38%.In other news, in the early summer 2009, Sberbank Capital, a unit of Sberbank, Russia's largest bank,acquired a 10% stake in Global Ports (GPI), which handles a third of Russia's container traffic. Thebenefits for GPI, a subsidiary of N-Trans, the largest private transportation and infrastructure group inRussia, from the deal are that the company now has the backing of a major state-owned bank. In 2009, we expect the total throughput of the port of St. Petersburg to decrease to 56.3mn tonnes,representing 6.12% fall on 2008, when the port handled 59.9mn tonnes of cargo. We anticipate the slowrecovery of throughput volumes to start in 2010. In the mid-term (2011-2013) we expect handling toincrease by 0.59% per year on average and not to exceed results reached in 2008. According to ourforecasts, in 2013 port's throughput will amount to 57.5mn tonnes. Container handling, according to our estimates, will fall by 15.42% to 1.677mn TEUs in 2009. Therecovery will start in 2010, and in 2012 the port will surpass its 2008 handling figure of 1.983mn TEUs.In the mid-term, between 2011 and 2013, the growth will continue by 6.39% per year on average. In2013, we expect the port to handle 2.093mn TEUs.
