AbstractThe Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has recently published the throughput results of thecountry's port operators for May 2009, which show a year-on-year (y-o-y) decrease in both tonnes andcontainers. May's estimated handling figures of 39.7mn tonnes and 2.1mn TEUs are lower than in thesame month of the previous year by 13.5% and 20.3% respectively. January-May container throughputwas down 18.4% y-o-y, from 12.498mn to 10.202mn TEUs.In 2009, we expect total throughput at country's main port, the port of Singapore, to decrease to 442.7mntonnes, representing a 14.1% fall on 2008, when the port handled 515.4mn tonnes of cargo. We anticipatethe slow recovery of throughput volumes to start in 2010. In the mid-term (2011-2013), we expecthandling to increase by 3.5% on average a year and not to exceed results reached in 2008. According toour forecasts, in 2013 port's throughput will amount to 498.2mn tonnes. Container handling, according to our estimates, will fall by 17.2% to 24.768mn TEUs in 2009. Therecovery will start in 2010, and in the mid-term, between 2011 and 2013, growth will continue by 4.4%per year on average. However, we do not anticipate the 2008 figure of 29.918mn TEUs to be exceeded, aswe expect the port to handle 28.642mn TEUs in 2013.
