Abstract

The combined pressures of the economic downturn and volatile packaging input prices have created fundamental change in retail food & beverage markets over the last few years, forcing brand owners throughout the world to re-evaluate their existing product ranges and develop new categories, products and packaging designs aimed at more cost-conscious, budget-restricted consumers.

And nowhere is this more prevalent than in the ambient liquid food category, where the economic deterioration is accelerating the growth in discount stores and in response the major food retailers worldwide are extending their ranges of private label ‘store brands’ as a means of competing and retaining market share. These factors are spawning a new range of products and brands which in turn are augmenting demand for new packaging types and designs aimed at providing opportunities for cost-reduction and light-weighting but without sacrificing the benefits of convenient, easy-to-use and environment-friendly packaging design.

Canadean’s first venture outside of its mainstream beverage markets, ‘Innovation in Liquid Food Packaging, 2009’, is a new special report aimed at providing an easily-digestible overview of current innovations in the ambient heat-processed liquid food market and an understanding of the factors and issues driving change in packaging design.

The report focuses upon liquid food packaging, and more particularly on retorted or otherwise heat-processed ambient liquid food products such as baby foods, condiments & sauces, cooking sauces, processed fish, fruit and vegetables and meat products, canned milk, ready meals, soups, tomatoes, jams, preserves & spreads, wet dog and cat food.

A companion to our ‘Innovation in Beverage Packaging’ study that was published in October 2008, the report is divided into five main sections covering the following topics and issues:
  • Section 1 - Introduction & Executive Summary - providing a succinct overview of key developments across the liquid food categories under review
  • Section 2 - Retail Food Market Overview & Trends - examining developments in the global food markets at a retail level, the key drivers of change and the growing influence of private label brands
  • Section 3 - Food Packaging Overview - containing an overview of global market for ambient heat-processed liquid foods, including packaging and end-use market trends
  • Section 4 - Packaging Innovation Drivers - as assessment of the major drivers of packaging design change covering issues such as cost reduction, environmental considerations, functionality and materials development
  • Section 5 - Packaging Innovation by Pack Type -the main body of the report, this section provides a detailed review of major packaging design developments in ambient liquid foods over the last 2 years segmented into six materials sub-sections (metal, glass, blow-moulded plastics, barrier plastic pots & trays, ambient flexible pouches and other packaging) together with an assessment of the active and intelligent packaging and the role of nano-technology.
