Worldwide market size is provided for 2008, along with trends and the revenue and market shares of the leading vendors. BPM software is a competitive market that consists of business process management suites, business process-oriented rules management software, business process-oriented model-driven development software, and process analytics. BPM software and BPM suites are both sized in this study.

"The BPM market grew well in 2008, although growth slowed compared with 2007. BPMS was the fastest-growing segment of BPM software," according to Maureen Fleming, program director, Business Process Management and Middleware. "Using a BPMS, an enterprise is able to automate the process of keeping track of work and automating some types of work. As these platforms become more sophisticated, there is increasing agility in making changes to work in process to improve collaboration across teams of workers and increase the depth of work that is automated."
