Abstract

India’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming products, was estimated to be worth around US$26.6bn in 2008.

This is expected to increase to US$44.7bn by 2013, driven by rising incomes and growing affordability.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 28% of Indian consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts India domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$6.7bn in 2009, up from US$6bn in 2008. With PC penetration currently around 2%, computer hardware CAGR for the 2008-2013 period will be around 11%.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 38% of Indian consumer electronics spending in 2008. India’s domestic video, audio and gaming device market was estimated at US$10.2 bn. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9% between 2008-2013, to a value of US$15.9bn in that year. Video applications account for around 86% of the total market.

Mobile Handsets

Indian mobile handset sales accounted for around 33% of Indian consumer electronics spending in 2008. Total Indian market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 15% to 327mn units in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration soars towards 90%. 3G handset unit sales are projected to increase at a CAGR of 56%.
