AbstractTaiwan’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets, and video, audio and gaming products, was estimated to be worth around US$8.6 bn in 2008.Market revenues are expected to increase to nearly US$10.0 bn by 2013, at a CAGR of 2%, slower than in the preceding five years. Some product groups are approaching saturation, but there will be a number of growth areas including 3G phones, smartphones, netbooks, Blu-ray DVD players and high-end notebooks. Computers Computers accounted for around 51% of Taiwan consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts Taiwan computer hardware sales of US$4.4bn in 2009, unchanged from the previous year. With PC penetration above 70%, CAGR for the 2008-2013 period will be around 2%, but there will be growth areas in multimedia and entertainment notebooks and netbooks. AV & Gaming Devices AV devices accounted for around 34% of Taiwan consumer electronics spending in 2008. Taiwan’s domestic video, audio and gaming device market was estimated at US$2.9 bn. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% between 2008-2013, to a value of US$3.8 bn in that year. Portable audio devices such as MP3/MP4 players account will continue to sell well, while fast-growing video applications include LCD TV sets and Blu-ray DVD players. Mobile Handsets Taiwan mobile handset sales accounted for around 15% of Taiwan consumer electronics spending in 2008. Total handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of about 1% to 7.3mn units in 2013, with the market driven mainly by replacements as penetration is already above 100%.
