Abstract

Malaysia’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices, mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming products, was estimated to be worth around US$7.6bn in 2008. Demand will increase at a CAGR of about 6% to US$9.9bn by 2013, but 2008 demonstrated that Malaysia consumer electronics expenditure remains vulnerable to economic instability.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 29% of Malaysia consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts Malaysia domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$2.37bn in 2009, up from US$2.24bn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2008-2013 period is forecast at about 7%, with household PC penetration in Malaysia still low, particularly in rural areas

AV

AV devices accounted for around 8% of Malaysia consumer electronics spending in 2008. Malaysia’s domestic AV device market was estimated at US$632mn. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3% between 2008-2013, to a value of US$741mn in that year.

Mobile Handsets

Malaysia mobile handset sales accounted for around 62% of Malaysia consumer electronics spending in 2008. Malaysia market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% to 6.6mn units in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 124%. Growth will be slower than in the preceding five years due to slowing subscriber growth, but demand will be sustained by a 128% increase in the number of 3G subscribers.
