Abstract

Demand in Western Europe for business consulting services weakened in 2008 and will decline in absolute terms in 2009, as a result of a more difficult economic and financial environment in the region. IDC is forecasting a CAGR of 1.8% for the period between 2008 and 2018; this relatively low CAGR mostly is a result of a forecast market decline in 2009, followed by a recovery in 2010-2012.

This IDC study gives decision makers information on:

  • The size of the opportunity for providing business consulting services in Western Europe in 2009-2013.
  • IDC's predictions and assumptions relating to the services market in general, and the impact they have on the business consulting services market in Western Europe.
  • Key recommendations for consultancies from IDC for defending their market share during what we the expected to be difficult market conditions in the remainder of 2009 and during the recovery in market demand that we expect in 2010-2012.

"Business consulting will be a tough business to be in during 2009 and 2010, with reduced end-user demand and consolidation of spend favoring the larger and stronger international brands, although healthy and well-positioned niche players can survive and even prosper too," said Douglas Hayward, research manager at IDC. "Business consulting will change structurally, and the industry should emerge from the recession stronger and more relevant to its customers."
