Abstract

Asia Pacific Videoconferencing Endpoints Market Grows Progressively, Bolstered by Government and Corporate Spending

The Asia Pacific videoconferencing endpoints market grew at 15.0 per cent in 2008, boosted by corporate and government sector customers. While the largest adopter of videoconferencing endpoints in the Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore markets was the corporate sector, the government sector led in China and India. While the potential for enabling cost-effective long-distance communications through videoconferencing in Asia Pacific is huge, the market participants face unique challenges in this diverse market. “High-definition (HD) sales, increasing internet protocol (IP) deployments, and enhanced endpoint products are the main drivers of the videoconferencing endpoints market in Asia Pacific,” says the analyst of this research. “Moreover, better network and IT infrastructure in several countries has resulted in greater affordability of operational costs to run the video - an important aspect for customers.”

Growth in mature economies such as Australia, Japan, and South Korea was mainly boosted by a higher uptake of the more expensive HD solutions. On the other hand, growth in emerging countries was primarily driven by the sales of the less expensive standard-definition (SD) and entry-level HD solutions. All regions have had the base drive to enable communication and save costs across distant cities and states, and this will continue to be strong in the long-term.

However, high capital investments for videoconferencing endpoints in HD solutions have resulted in lower sales in the emerging markets. The global economic slump is affecting both government and corporate user spending, and this may be a benefit to the videoconferencing industry Also, there is competition from low-cost software based video solutions. Software based videoconferencing software have a strong footing in the lower end of the market. “Despite reduced spending in the uncertain economic scenario, most customers realize that investing in endpoint solutions is a saving in the long-term, compared to direct travel,” concludes the analyst. “Therefore, steady growth is expected for videoconferencing in Asia Pacific, and operational expenditure models such as managed services for videoconferencing will be more popular, especially when the economic climate is severe.”
