Abstract

For those with less familiarity of telecommunications billing services, this report outlines the defining features of different types of billing companies and the systems they design. It presents an overview of the industry, featuring key elements of the current generation of billing systems and the implications of telecommunications convergence on future designs in a straightforward approach using non-technical language and descriptions. In response to tremendous growth in the communications industry and the growing need for advanced telecommunications billing systems, Atlantic-ACM has reviewed both direct and local exchange carrier (LEC) billers of various sizes and capabilities. The contents of this report are based on interviews with executives at each billing company, as well as surveys completed by their clients.

Information in the report includes an overview of the type of billing on which each company focuses, residential/commercial volume breakdowns, client support issues, system processing and rate table capabilities and free capacity estimates. For additional direct comparisons of each firm's capabilities, Atlantic-ACM has included check lists for long distance, wireless, multimedia, local and enhanced billing functions. Additional services provided by each firm such as credit card billing capabilities, e-mail delivery of end user bills, call center operations, operator services and others are also listed.
