Synopsis

Abstract

This Government Insights report tracks major IPv6 "influencers" by global region, including government groups, industry consortiums, equipment manufacturers, telecom carriers, educational organizations, and key technology leaders. Governments around the world are in a unique position to help their citizens prepare for the coming global transition to IPv6 by making sure that their own networks are ready first. The first step is to understand which groups and vendors are helping to lead the IPv6 effort and to understand levels of Internet data traffic around the globe.

"Much of 2009 may be a quiet year for IPv6," says Shawn P. McCarthy, Government Insights' research director for Government Infrastructure Optimization and Vendor programs. "That is because much of the progress will take place in small, local iterations. But as Internet-enabled mobile devices, data sensors, and voice over IP systems expand, the need for IPv6 will jump, and governments need to be ready to assist with the transition for both their own networks and their citizens and industries."
