Abstract

This report details last year's growth of the flat panel display market by 16.0% to approximately 12 trilion yen - a net increase of 1.7 trillion yen. LCD's increased by approximately 2 trillion yen and electronic paper increased by 10 billion yen. Other devices increased or decreased only slightly, except CPTs (CRTs for TVs) and PDPs, which declined sharply, by more than 200 and 100 billion yen, respectively.

The report also identifies certain significant events in the industry, such as, cooperative agreements announced between Sharp and Sony, Sharp and Toshiba, and Hitachi/Matsushita/Canon, as well as Samsung and Sony's plan to continue their cooperative arrangement, increasing the potential for a vertically integrated maker of everything from panels to TVs. Another example of a significant event detailed in this report is the increase in PDP production by Matsushita and Samsung, but the halt in PDP production by Pioneer, LG Electronics, and Samsung.
