This study also includes forecasts of unit shipments of wireless home routers in each region, as well as the growth of the installed base of wireless home networks, broken down by wireless protocol. "Home networking has reached a penetration in high-income households sufficient for device manufacturers to expect that a consumer of a high-end device has a wireless home network. The decline in cost of networking technologies and significant improvements in interfaces portend well for not only networked entertainment devices but also high-end appliances and housewares that could benefit from network awareness. The global economic crisis will weigh on the industry for the next year and a half, but it will only mean a pause in a continuing arc toward a networked home," said Jonathan Gaw, research manager of IDC's Connected Home program.
