The personal navigation market is growing rapidly today; the European market is far more advanced as compared to US. The introduction of portable navigation devices (PNDs) has breathed new life into the European aftermarket for telematics and infotainment systems and given a strong boost to its sales growth. However, gradually the PND market is ending its fast-growth phase and moving into a stage of maturity.

Advanced features such as traffic information services are now becoming standard across all forms of portable navigation. Another interesting trend is the move away from simple dedicated PND systems towards multi-function devices with hands-free kit and MP3 player features. The PND market is heavily concentrated and dominated by two players (Garmin and TomTom) despite having relatively low barriers to entry.

The under-penetrated market for in-vehicle navigation continues to be the main growth driver for PND sales. Also decline in the average price per unit is one of the contributors of rising demand.
