Now is the time for every financial services institution (FSI) to examine its IT governance structure to ensure it has enterprise control of technology decisions so as to get the biggest bang for the IT buck.

IT governance is still emerging or gaining maturity in the securities industry, and conflicting goals of the various lines of business present the greatest challenge.

The 2008 TowerGroup Survey of IT Governance finds that line-of-business executives are considered tech savvy, and IT understands the business needs and is important to revenue generation strategies meriting allocation of time and effort.

Centralized IT governance to contain costs is a reality but still needs more management champions.

Only by fostering an environment in which IT and business become partners rather than adversaries will IT governance gain momentum; firms should be structuring knowledge transfer to deepen the relationship.

FSIs deem IT important for revenue generation, but for new technology to have the greatest enterprise impact requires a top-down dissemination of available solutions under the aegis of an IT governance regime

Massive write-offs, staff layoffs, and slashed budgets are forcing securities and investment firms to do more with less despite continuously rising transaction volumes. Technology rationalization and consolidation across the enterprise become critical to ensure that available dollars are well spent and the firm remains a competitive. IT governance becomes essential for enterprise control of technology.
