Abstract

The manufacture of dump semi trailers in North America is a unique segment of the semi trailer industry. These units can be very simple, such as end dump semi trailers made of steel or aluminum, to very complicated side or bottom dump units. A few manufacturers, such as Smithco and Side Dump Industries, focus on manufacturing side dump trailers, while most manufacturers primarily produce end dump trailers.

Fifty-eight companies have been identified as manufacturers of dump semi trailers. Among these companies, dump trailers are the predominant product line for about half of the players. Based on the approximate number of final units, this segment represents an activity of around $567 million.

Going forward, the key factor for success increasingly will be the ability to produce lighter -weight units that can haul more cargo. This is due to the high prices for diesel fuel, which directly affect customers in this market, primarily fleets and owner-operators. If a manufacturer can make a trailer lighter, without compromising the safety or performance of the tractor and trailer, the customer can make a profit on the unit in a shorter time frame. Some manufacturers use aluminum in the dump body, but aluminum is not a suitable material for hauling large rocks. Other manufacturers use high-end steel to make the units last longer. Both aluminum and high-end steel units cost more, but are attractive to users because of weight savings and longevity. East and MAC have also introduced frameless dump semi trailers, which improve fuel mileage and lessen the weight of the unit.

Dump semi trailer manufacturing is still a very regional market, with MANAC, MAC, Ranco, Trail King and Beall as the only manufacturers with multiple manufacturing facilities. This report breaks out regional production, as well as displaying estimated unit production and sales for each manufacturer within the dump semi trailer market.
