Abstract

The Brazilian Internet broadband access market is yet far from reaching its full potential. Current fixed broadband networks are concentrated in big urban centers and medium sized cities and take connectivity to less than 13% of Brazilian households. Compare this to developed countries such as the United States, where broadband service penetration over households reached 52%.

However, as 3G networks start to be deployed, there is a strong expectation that mobile broadband will fill in the gaps left by fixed broadband networks in Brazil. Indeed, within months since the first mobile broadband service targeting consumers was introduced in Brazil, the volume of connections sold surpassed expectations, strongly contributing to the digital inclusion in the country.

In this issue of the Brazil Telecommunications Services CIS, IDC studies the evolution of mobile broadband in early adopters countries and analyzes the potential of mobile broadband services in Brazil.
