This IDC study examines the outdoor WiFi mesh industry, specifically analyzing the challenges faced by the segment in 2007 and the new drivers that have emerged in light of the market slowdown. IDC believes the outdoor WiFi mesh sector will continue to provide a significant infrastructure opportunity in the years to come. While the municipal sector may have stalled for the time being, the market is now being driven by public safety? and municipal-related initiatives that are actually funded and thus provide tangible market opportunities for equipment vendors. This will be the key driver for the industry in the future.

"Outdoor WiFi mesh technology had a tough year in 2007. The politicization of the process and an emphasis on the digital divide by the municipal wireless initiatives distracted from the creation of viable business models. There are, however, real merits to the technology. With the slowdown, market drivers have shifted to funded and paid-for systems providing, for example, public safety applications. This will make for a more viable opportunity going forward," said Godfrey Chua, research manager for Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure.
