Synopsis

Abstract

This IDC study shows that the key to sustaining growth is the ability to increase business productivity when confronted with IT human resource constraints. Currently, Australian employers are experiencing an unprecedented set of circumstances. Due to changing demographics, the working-age population is shrinking and Australia is facing a skills crisis as a result. The economy has delivered close to full employment, creating intense competition for IT talent. Additionally, mature-aged workers are contemplating retirement and today's employees are independent and highly mobile. They place high value on education and skills development, plus they also have high expectations of work-life balance. The key to sustaining growth is the ability to increase business productivity when confronted with this IT human resources constraint.

"It is imperative that organisations planning to sustain growth, include a strategy focused on engaging and retaining the best IT talent in their business plans," says Melissa Martin, senior market analyst, IDC Australia.
