Highlights

In 2006, the company created a global retail and commercial banking (GRCB) segment by bringing together UK banking, international retail and commercial banking and Barclaycard. GRCB gives Barclays a single point of strategic direction and control to these businesses. Barclays attempted to acquire ABN AMRO in 2006, but, it was outbid by a consortium led by Royal Bank of Scotland. This step temporarily stalled Barclays’ plans to expand in Asia. However, Barclays has taken several other initiatives to grow its retail and commercial banking business in Asia. The company is aligning its business and operations, in terms of capability and geographic footprint, to capture the opportunities provided by changing market trends. Barclays is investing heavily in retail and commercial banking businesses in Western Europe, primarily in Italy, Spain and Portugal, and in emerging markets such as India, Egypt.
