AbstractThis report investigates the components used by the systems known as Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (R-OADMs.) These devices are currently available in equipment from major equipment vendors. These products are based on a variety of sub-system technologies that have been developed largely by small start-up companies.
The flexibility introduced by R-OADMs has the potential to offer great operations cost savings as well as possibly capital cost savings and, ultimately, new revenue sources. Because of these potentials, this system development is of great interest to all major carriers. Even in this time of extremely tight capital budgets, everyone is interested in investments that offer substantial operations savings.
This report describes the R-OADM technology, the market potential with detailed forecasts and the vendors involved in the component market.
