EDLC Supercapacitors: World Markets: 2006-2010Published by: Paumanok Publications Published: Mar. 1, 2008 Table of Contents
AbstractThis study addresses the global market for electric double layer carbon (EDLC) supercapacitors, which demonstrate the unique characteristics of having extremely high capacitance (in the farad range) in low voltage cells (1.2 to 1.5 Vdc in large quantities). The study looks at this fledging market, the players, the technical challenges, technical threats; activated carbon supply chain; and the end-markets in which these devices are consumed- consumer, professional, industrial and automotive electronics. The study focuses on coin cells and large can supercapacitors’ and the rapid growth of large can designs in variable speed drives; and heavy trucks and busses. The use of large can EDLC to displace NiMH battery packs in the Nissan Condor® is addressed; and the use of EDLC banks to replace NiMH packs in the BMW X3 and X5 platforms is also noted. The supply chain is of keen interest, including both carbon cloth and powder; the need for higher voltages per cell, automation; and lower raw materials prices is addressed in order to obtain automotive targets of $0.01 per farad by 2008.
