It also provides an overview of regulation, competitor activities, product innovation and market forecasts. It concludes with an analysis of the Spanish market.

Scope

The focus of the report is on consumer payment cards, as opposed to commercial card products. Data and analysis provided on debit cards, credit cards and deferred debit and charge cards. The report parameters extend to card issuance only. Merchant acquiring and card processing are not covered. Historic market data is presented for 2002-06, with forecasts presented to 2011. Highlights

Cash is the most common form of payment in Spain, with an estimated 51.6% of consumer transaction value carried out with this method. The dominance of cash means that payment cards are very commonly used to withdraw cash from Spain's abundant network of ATM terminals. Issuers in Spain are amongst the most innovative in Europe. Loyalty schemes are common and several issuers have launched prepaid products. Other innovations include personalized cards with the cardholder's choice of photograph on it and a product that rounds up transaction values to the nearest EUR5 and places the difference in a savings account. The Spanish payment market is expected to continue growing to 2011, with the value of transactions forecast to increase at a compound annual rate of 8%. The biggest growth area is forecast to be in the revolving credit market, where the value of transactions is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 20%.
