The Future of Checks

Summary

Abstract

North America is not the only region implementing image exchange to reduce the use of paper. Asia has also been at the forefront, with check truncation programs recently implemented in Hong Kong and Singapore and an image exchange system implemented by China as of June 2007. The Chinese story has an interesting twist, however. Countries typically implement image exchange for efficiency, yet China sees checks as an opportunity to implement a new national payment instrument to replace cash for retail transactions. This TowerGroup ViewPoint reviews the development of the check image exchange program in China and ponders its value to the Chinese consumer.
