Abstract

The apparent UK market for the manufacture of clothing was worth an estimated £13.06bn at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 2006, up by 1.5% on 2005 and 2.7% higher than in 2002. The value of the market in 2006 is estimated to be at a 5-year high.

The main market sectors are menswear and boys' clothing and womenswear and girls' clothing, with the largest sectors of the market being womenswear and menswear. In terms of household expenditure, one of the strongest-growing sectors between 2001/2002 and 2005/2006 was womenswear, while household expenditure on both menswear and childrenswear was lower in 2005/2006 than in 2001/2002.

The number of UK-based clothing manufacturers has been falling continuously and, in 2006, the total fell to a new 5-year low. The contraction has affected all segments of the market, although the number of underwear manufacturers has been especially badly hit. The sector least affected by falling company numbers is workwear, and this is the only sector in which there are more companies operating in the industry in 2007 than in 2003.

The UK clothing manufacturing sector remains under pressure from low-cost imports and from the switching of production from UK factories to lower-cost production plants overseas. One of the latest UK plants to be closed was the Burberry polo-shirt manufacturing facility in Treorchy, South Wales, which was shut down in March 2007 after Burberry decided that it was not commercially viable and transferred production to lower-cost countries.

The apparent UK market for clothing is expected to increase slowly but steadily up to 2011; however, UK manufacturers' sales are forecast to continue falling, with the increase in the overall market size being met by imports. Further rationalisation is expected in the manufacturing sector and also in some sectors of the clothing retail market (such as menswear), which are coming under increasing pressure from discount clothing suppliers.
