Market Overview

High Unmet Need Creates Opportunity for Novel NHL Drugs

It is estimated that about 1.75 million people worldwide are living with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). The risk of developing the disease increases with age, especially among the 55-75 age group. Moreover, with life expectancy levels rising across Europe, the demand for NHL drugs is set to grow. Accordingly, the European NHL therapeutics markets are set to expand from an estimated $2.2 billion in 2006 to almost $7.2 billion in 2013. NHL is a complicated disease with about 25-30 sub types. Clinical trials required for each indication makes the entry of novel drugs difficult. At present, the market is monopolised by MabThera. Although CHOP chemotherapy is the major treatment for all forms of NHL, it is highly genericised with limited prospects for revenue growth.

"The relapsing nature of NHL is impelling the need for new therapeutic options," notes the analyst of this research. "Though MabThera is very popular and has gained widespread acceptance, there still exists a high unmet need among NHL patients." Market dynamics are poised to change in the near future with the anticipated launch of many promising pipeline drugs currently in phase 3 of development. However, most research-based biotechnology firms are currently battling significant losses. Moreover, stringent clinical and regulatory hurdles could curb potential returns from biotechnology products. For such companies, difficulties in securing resources to fund clinical trials will delay the development process and extend the time to market.

Strategy of Developing Add-on Drugs Likely to Gain Success

MabThera is projected to retain its market leadership position over the next 5-6 years. Most drugs in the pipeline are being positioned as add-on combination therapies with MabThera or CHOP. The market is poised to accelerate from 2012 onwards, pushed by the numerous promising drugs currently in phase 3 development stage. Add-on drugs, in combination with the current market leader MabThera or chemotherapy, is a prospective market driver. For instance, Favrille is pinning its hopes on Favid being a block buster when approved for commercialisation.

Most oncologists are satisfied with MabThera and may not replace it with newer alternatives. Hence, combination drugs with MabThera or CHOP would gain easier acceptance among oncologists and patients. "Big pharma should look for strategic alliances or acquisition of promising pipeline drugs," advises the analyst. "Small-sized biotechnology companies should focus on research and finding a suitable marketing partner.
