Summary

Abstract

Canada's real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system, the Large Value Transfer System (LVTS), is supervised by the Bank of Canada. A handful of very large clearing banks dominate direct access to this system. Four of the five use the Bank Electronic Settlement System (BESS), a wire-transfer application supplied by LogicaCMG, which has recently announced plans for the eventual retirement of the application.

This TowerGroup Research Note explores the strategic options for major Canadian banks faced with the prospect of the retirement of BESS and suggests that that eventuality presents an opportunity for the banks to differentiate themselves and create strategic payment platforms.
