Technologies
The following technology is covered in this research:
- AC-DC Switching Power Supplies (SPS): These are devices that use switching semiconductors to convert AC power input into DC power output. SPS products use the switcher technology of increasing the actual frequency of the main’s AC power and then rectifying it to obtain DC output. Only SPS products are covered in this study, excluding linear design rectifier products.
Market Overview
Thriving Electronic Goods Market Drives Demand for AC-DC SPS
Increasing consumption of electronic goods globally continues to generate strong demand for AC-DC switching power supplies (SPS). Electronic goods require high-quality power, and AC-DC SPS are able to meet these needs due to their multiple output features. Lean manufacturing methods used for AC-DC SPS reduce the size and weight of the power unit, making them end-user friendly. With their superior quality, better performance, and smaller size, AC-DC SPS products are extensively used in the telecommunications industry and increasingly in the industrial and automation sector.
"However, the new system design of intermediate bus architecture (IBA) is expected to penetrate the telecommunications and industrial application sectors," says the analyst of this research service. "This is likely to result in the replacement of centralized AC-DC SPS systems by a network of DC-DC converters." While this has affected the consumption of centralized multi output systems, continued demand for AC-DC SPS products as front ends offsets this to some extent. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as 3G, general packet radio service (GPRS), power over Ethernet (PoE), and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is expected to drive fresh demand for power supplies in telecom infrastructure.
SPS Preferred over SCR for Critical Applications
Technologically, SPS products have remained more or less the same except for a change in switching semiconductors, which has helped enhance their functionality, portability, and efficiency. SPS products offer superior output performance compared to the older silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR)-based design and are generally preferred for critical applications despite being more expensive than SCR. On the other hand, non-critical, high-power applications usually favor SCR-based power supplies, particularly in cost-conscious regions such as Asia Pacific.
"AC-DC SPS products are considered more efficient and reliable compared to SCR-based and diode-based type power supplies," says the analyst. "Economies of scale have allowed SPS products to overcome competition from SCR-based design even SCR products are less expensive." Standardization of power supplies in Europe is now allowing SPS products to be used in both critical and high-power, non-critical applications in this region. This could result in an increase in demand for SPS in Europe, particularly Eastern Europe.
