Abstract

The Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Plug and Play Smart TEDS Sensors Market provides a detailed analysis on the various smart TEDS sensors that cater to a number of end-user segments. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following end-user markets: automotive, aerospace and defense, research labs and other industrial applications.

Considerable Cost Savings through Reduced Setup Time and Labor

Plug and play smart transducer electronic datasheet (TEDS) sensors are particularly valuable for companies that perform a significant amount of testing and look to save on cost, setup time, and labor. These sensors allow end users to monitor and collect actual data and, accordingly, modify the ongoing test and measurement (T&M) processes. Furthermore, TEDS sensors enable detailed planning, including precise preparation to ensure measuring points are correctly assigned and that parameters of the measuring chains are suitably adjusted. Since TEDS allows for self-identification and easier calibration, the flexibility of the set-up is also increased. This is significant especially in T&M applications in which sensors require to be calibrated at regular intervals to ensure accuracy.

However, demand for TEDS sensors is presently low with aerospace, automotive companies and research labs being the primary users. The biggest problem with TEDS sensors is still - who needs it? "The sensor industry has done relatively poor job of making people aware of TEDS and the benefits it provides," notes Senior Research Analyst V.Sankaranarayanan. "While TEDS has its advantages, it is not necessarily true that customers entirely understand what these advantages are."

High Cost of TEDS Data Acquisition Systems Hinders End-user Acceptance

The primary reason for the poor acceptance of the 1451.4 TEDS model is due to its high cost of the TEDS data acquisition systems. Sensor manufacturers can build the 1451.4 TEDS smart sensors at a reduced cost by using the Dallas Maxim I wire chip that includes the unique ID, but the balance of the system required to make it meaningful is proving to be expensive. Hence, as the balance of the system cost overwhelms the cost of the sensor, this relatively inexpensive smart sensor then becomes prohibitively expensive. Even though a 1451.4 TEDS smart sensor can be priced as low as $10.0 or $15.0 by using the Dallas I wire chip, customers may have to spend an additional $2,000.0 more to make use of the sensor.

Among product segments, TEDS-based accelerometers and microphones accounted for 65.2 and 29.0 percent, respectively, of the market revenues in 2006. TEDS-based pressure sensors, load cells, and other product types such as linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) and torque sensors constituted only 5.8 percent of the market. "Geographically, North America remains the dominant market for TEDS, followed next by Europe," says Sankaranarayanan. "In Europe, the acceptance of TEDS is good because the region’s active aerospace and automotive industries seem interested in using TEDS accelerometers and microphones.
