Abstract

The bankcard industry in China first started when the Bank of China issued its first bankcard back in 1985. The industry has since changed and matured, and current major players include Chinese banks, three bankcard organizations and other specialized bankcard service companies. With China fully opening its banking sector to foreign competition as of Dec. 11, 2006, foreign banks are now allowed to issue bankcards and this has resulted in a boom in bankcard-related industries such as tourism, retail and e-commerce. All these signs serve to point to tremendous growth and opportunities within China’s bankcard industry.

Chapter One provides the background on the development of China’s bankcard industry.

Chapter Two gives a big picture of the current bankcard market, including market segmentation and profiles of the major players in the market.

Chapter Three delves into the current bankcard industry in detail and includes descriptions of bankcard organizations and the bankcard industry chain.

Chapter Four touches on regulations that the Chinese government imposes on the bankcard industry.

Chapter Five offers a future outlook for the bankcard industry, including trends and projected figures.
