Abstract

This IDC Presentation discusses how fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) is going to trigger restructuring and changes in the business structure and network infrastructure carriers. FMC will threaten some legacy services but will also create new opportunities for fixed and mobile carriers to compete in each other's spaces. New technologies such as IP television (IPTV), mobile television, location- and context-aware functions, WiMAX, mesh networking, peer-to-peer (P2P) computing, software-defined radio equipment, IPv6 upgrades, and multimode mobile devices will place new demands on IT infrastructures in terms of storage requirements, billing, customer care, decision support, and IP-based applications.

In this presentation (presented on October 27, 1006 at the IDC Asia/Pacific Client Summit in Phuket, Thailand), IDC offers views on the following:

The impact that FMC will have on each of the layers of a network infrastructure ? access, control, transport, routing/switching, gateways, and build and service ? in order to better understand how FMC impacts IT and related systems integration (SI) carriers. The emergence of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16-2004 (Fixed WiMAX) and IEEE 802.16-2005 (Mobile WiMAX) and their impact on accelerating FMC and telemedia service trends. 3.5G and broadband wireless access (BWA) global technology trends ? new technologies such as multiple input, multiple output (MIMO), software-defined radio equipment, mesh networking, mobile television, and VoIP over WiMAX. Network equipment capex forecasts and analyses of mobile network infrastructures. General comparisons and timelines for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) versus Mobile WiMAX network equipment. Options for mobile carriers who are starting to evaluate a number of trade-offs relating to next-generation wireless technologies across the Asia/Pacific region.
