Zimbabwe Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Q4 2006Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Dec. 1, 2006 - 53 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractThe value of the Zimbabwean drug market has fallen dramatically since the mid-nineties and is now negligible. The collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar, the economic consequences of government policy and deteriorating relations with the international community has made Zimbabwe an extremely difficult location for drug manufacturers. Inflation is running at over 1,000% per year, while drug prices have increased by 1,376% since January 2005. Local drugmakers must rely on exports in order to generate enough foreign currency to survive. Domestic drugmaker CAPS Holdings, for example, sells drugs in a wide range of African markets. However, the company has recently lost its partner - Indian generics maker Shreya - in a local joint venture. Shreya is one of India's leading ARV producers and its exit from the Zimbabwe, which has one of the highest HIV/AIDS caseloads in the world, is indicative of the challenging circumstances for even the most resilient of companies. BMI's adjusted Business Environment Rankings for the Middle East & Africa reveal that Zimbabwe is in 14th place. This is primarily due to the country's dismal long term political and economic environment. Rampant inflation and shortages of foreign currency has made domestic production difficult. Counterfeits are a major problem, and the situation is becoming even more severe as medicines are unaffordable for much of the population. Endemic corruption both in the health service and among government officials has also helped create a burgeoning black market.
