This study analyzes the market situation in 2005 and 1H06 and provides a forecast up to 2010. It also includes IDC's recommendations to service providers (SPs). The Japan IT services market has been expanding steadily with the economic recovery. In 2005, the IT services market grew 3.3% from 2004 to 4,704.8 billion yen. IDC forecasts that the market will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4% from 2005 to reach 5,552.6 billion yen in 2010. However, considering the business sentiment among Japan companies, a slight sense of stagnation is felt. From an "absolute curb" on IT investments primarily to save cost, companies in Japan are shifting toward the stance of "curbing spending related to existing systems and implementing strategic investment" aimed at business expansion/reinforcement. The "strategic investment" that customers are interested in are not general products/services but solutions that bring about innovation. "It is important for SPs to discard the concept of IT services as an outsourcing business and develop products/services with a focus on customers. To do so, it will be effective to actively forge alliances with customers and their counterparts in the same or different industries," comments Satoshi Matsumoto, senior market analyst, IT services, IDC Japan.
