Synopsis

Abstract

This market analysis assesses the state of cable VOD in the United States and provides a five-year forecast of VOD?enabled digital cable subscribers and VOD services revenues through 2010. Included is a discussion of the primary VOD business models and the way in which VOD is helping to shape the future of digital video consumption across multiple platforms and usage environments. The study concludes with a discussion of the ways in which VOD is positioned relative to emerging Internet video services.

"By the end of 2006, IDC expects there to be nearly 27 million digital cable subscribers in the United States with access to video on demand with annual revenues well above $1 billion," said Greg Ireland, research manager in IDC's Consumer Market's program. "VOD is part of an ongoing move from linear to on-demand content consumption. However, VOD is still facing numerous challenges, particularly as Internet video services compete for dollars and mindshare."
