Technology Overview

Technological Innovations and Combinations to Hasten Advances in Air Purification Systems

Researchers and industrialists are working on combining a particulate filter and an activated filter in order to make air purification systems effective not just against a single pollutant but against various pollutants. Such units are not only more efficient air cleaners but are also more economical and have smaller footprints than separate units of carbon and particulate filters. These technologies are used in homes and commercial buildings such as banks, hospitals, and in industrial sector including nuclear powerplants.

"Recent R&D efforts have resulted in the use of titanium dioxide coatings on filters to reduce airborne contaminants such as bacteria and viruses that are prevalent in hospitals and other inhabited places," says the analyst of this research service. "These coatings are also now being tried in the automotive sector, where they are being applied on in new cars in order to control the high level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are present." Apart from these advances, scientists have also improved upon conventional thermal oxidizers. The new-age regenerative thermal oxidizers are cost-effective and highly efficient in eliminating toxic and volatile components present in industrial emissions.

Continuous Monitoring of Air Quality Vital due to Increase in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The rising need for renewable energy sources as well as the increase in levels of greenhouse gas emissions has made it imperative to monitor air quality and use these gases - specifically CO2 and CH4 - as renewable sources of energy. This is achieved by capturing gases emanating from the landfills so that instead of polluting the air, they can be used productively. However, the technologies for air quality management do not monitor the air continuously and this causes a delay in alerting authorities to the rise in pollution levels. Scientists are focusing on constant monitoring to enable immediate detection of contaminants and such devices have already been installed in incinerator plants.

Similarly, while technologies to monitor emission levels from mobile sources such as cars, trucks, buses, helicopters, and ships do exist, there is a mounting need to continuously monitor the pollutants. "Existing technologies focus on improving either the engine or fuel efficiency, which directly results in the reduction of emission levels," notes the analyst. Although this method is effective, a new as well as time- and cost-efficient technology called Internet-based emission tests provides uninterrupted assessment for vehicles, eliminating the need to take the vehicles to a service station for emissions and smog tests.
