Abstract

During 2004, we interviewed ten telco CIOs (or equivalents), and analysed what they told us. The results of this can be found in our August 2004 report The Telco CIO Agenda 2004.

Our 2004 report highlighted four top priorities for telco CIOs:

- reduce complexity - we heard these two words from every CIO. The legacy has to be tackled
- reduce IT costs - IT has to take its share of cost cutting within most telcos, along with other cost centres. The IT budget is no longer a protected species. IT budgets are static at best, and continuing to fall in most telcos
- define architecture - IT must define a more integrated path for future IT systems, which enables rapid development of new systems to support the rapid rollout of new services
- enhance CRM and billing - better CRM is fundamental to customer acquisition and retention in a competitive market. New billing systems are required by many to enable more rapid introduction of new services, and, in particular, billing for content services.

During 2005, we decided to return to this research. We went back to revisit CIOs at five of the telcos: BT, Cable & Wireless (C&W), Equant, Swisscom and TeliaSonera.

What had changed? The simple answer is “not very much”. The four priorities listed above are all still very much alive. However, there have been some modest shifts in emphasis. The first section summarises the ten key themes that emerged in 2005. Following this are five updated CIO profiles.
